FAQ

Frequently asked question about our professional training to become a Somatic Movement Educator or to dive into our Somatic Basics Year.

Can I dive into this basics training? Can anyone start?

  • Yes, the basics training does not have any pre-requisites and can be attended by anyone interested.

What benefits do I have as a student at the Somatic Academy Berlin?

  • Participants of Somatic Movement Education / Somatic Basics Training / Somatic Pedagogy Training enjoy several benefits, p.ex. 50% discount of various regular classes, 10% discount for up to two events (workshops, modules) during the duration of the training program for ans 20% for one additional complete training program (C.A.R.E, Somatic Yoga, Environmental Somatics, Continuum, Somatic Hands On, Somatic Voice). >> more info

What does the completion of the Somatic Basic Year mean? I am allowed to start working using this knowledge?

  • The answer to this is no. The Somtic Basics Year is not geared toward teaching but to spend 6 weeks in experiencing the material in your own body first. The ability to teach rests very much on having had enough space to just receive the material and not be already busy with transmitting it. For this reason people join this year also if they do not have professional ambitions but just for their own process.
  • The Somatic Pedagogy Training is the 10-module training that we feel assured and comfortable enough to issue certification, one that is also linked in with ISMETA.org the somatic professional alliance / association that sets some standards for professional trainings in this field.

What do I have to do to be able to start working officially as somatic therapist in Germany?

  • See above. And this training is geared toward group instruction. It falls under pedagogy or facilitation. The profession of a therapist is very tightly regulated in Germany as it usually involves diagnostics and an approved course of action geared toward alleviating symptoms/healing. Only doctors and psychotherapists, etc... fall under that. Heilpraktiker (Naturopaths) are also allowed to work with individuals hands-on and refer to themselves as doing varies kinds of therapies and lots of different forms of bodyworkers do hands-on but they do not refer to themselves as “therapists”.

Is this completion a recognized certificate from the government?

  • Trainings are recognised as adult education freed from VAT. We are working on being certified for approval for places like jobcenters or health insurances. But the field as a whole is very young it depends on what is meant by “recognition”.
  • Somatic Practitioners work in Masters Programms for Dance Students or in Special Clinics or with children or it really depends on how people fold it in to the conventional spectrum of professions.

Around how many people will be in a class?

  • It has varied between 16 and 30 over the last 8 years.

Are there many exams during the training?

  • The Somatic Basics Training has no exams. The second part of our ISMETA certified training to become a Somatic Movement Educator, the Somatic Pedagogy Training, has quite a bit of home work.

What does the mandatory participation of the regular course program mean?

  • Inbetween modules there are usually around 2 months. We are encouraging people to ensure some practice time in-between modules (20 Classes per year) in order to stay connected to the process in-between as we found that that is not so easy for people to self-initiate their own practice in the beginning.
