- Resetting the Nervous System with Dynamic Embodiment® Touch and Movement
Module 2 with Dr. Martha Eddy
We explore how stress and trauma differ, yet are related and how our bodies can help us perceive what state we’re in. Learn to recognize subtle triggers and larger pressures on the Stress-to-Trauma Continuum using sophisticated hands-on strategies for activating diverse body systems and rhythms (using Body-Mind Centering®, Dynamic Embodiment® and BodyMind Dancing). Cranio-Sacral and other physiological rhythms can be engaged to support resilient responses. Learn bodily skills to balance the nervous system enough for safety and to help you find physiological calm.
What does the module focus on?
Learn to recognize subtle triggers and larger pressures on the Stress-to-Trauma Continuum. This view answers how stress and trauma differ and yet are related. Using movement and hands-on touch we explore how our bodies help us perceive what state we’re in. Cranio-Sacral and other physiological rhythms can be engaged to support resilient responses to tough decisions and situations.
Part of the module time will be discerning with observation and intuition, what you can control and what you need to let go of. A goal is to look into the future without fear. Practice grounding, centering and setting boundaries. Learn the bodily skills to balance the nervous system enough for safety and to help you find physiological calm. At least 50% of class time will be dedicated to Eddy's Dynamics of Touch- exploring sophisticated hands-on strategies for activating diverse body systems (as taught in Body-Mind Centering®) and rhythms as developed in Dynamic Embodiment® and BodyMind Dancing.
- The vagus nerve’s role in determining our psychological and emotional states — and how a myriad of common psychological and physical symptoms, from anxiety and depression to migraines and back pain, link back to issues with peri-vagal nerve connections.
- Homeostasis (maintaining body systems such as blood pH or body temperature) and allostasis (maintaining stability through altering physiologic parameters to counteract changing dynamics)
- Movement’s role in stress and stress management, including the positive use of reflexive responses
- Dissipating stressors with return to the breath and imagery strategies
- Guided movement practices where you embody boundaries with your lymph, muscles, and gaze, strengthening your ability to act for change.

What is HANDS ON about?
In keeping with the integrative and interdisciplinary approach of the Somatic Academy, in this training we give a focus to various individual somatic treatment approaches.
Often Somatic Methods impart their knowledge in the context of movement and sensory education classes or group instruction. In doing so, some methods have also developed a large treatment vocabulary for one-on-one sessions.
Each module and the method(s) it contains has its own focus. Direct, sensing and 'listening' touch play a central role. The numerous, concrete skills and techniques that are taught meet the conscious participation of the recipient. The experience of being touched and being treated thus intertwine in individual somatic work. They are interdependent and thus become more deeply effective for the person being treated - as well as a source for personal learning and change through the felt body.
