- Somatic Butoh
Subtle Body Subtle Space
What is Somatic Butoh about?
In this continuing education we will approach how to do less or nothing and then how can we be moved, transformed, walked, and danced. Butoh is not a dance to be created artificially from outside, from a skilful A to B placement of body parts, it is the dance within that moves the body, and with whom, every single breath, gesture, and movement awake and blooms like a flower.
One of the main features of butoh is metamorphosis, transformation, or so-called "embodiment".
But how can we transform at the beginning from the "ordinary" solid body that we have? What are the principles, the exercises, and the training that can facilitate such an entrance into the butoh journey?
This module can also be booked individually as the first module of the Somatic Butoh continuing education and serves as an introduction to the concept and idea of Somatic Butoh.
The entrance: Subtle Body Subtle Space
- The somatic realm in butoh is located beneath the surface of “verbality”, cultural influences and the mind's mechanism and triggers
- In butoh, we can recognize a bodily new consciousness focused not on how the body will look or will be seen but on how it is felt and moved. In this immersive in-depth listening
- the usual “ executers” muscles, (: “ Do this”; “Do that”; “Go from A to B” etc...) will be explored in a different way than in the “efficient” daily life
- Then the “unnoticed” will emerge between voluntary and involuntary and a different body and response will emerge
- In this research, the body will be scanned and deconstructed and a new subtle body will emerge. This initial journey is the entrance.
For whom is Somatic Butoh recommended?
This continuing education is crucially important as the bridge between Somatics's practises and the dance-movement research that goes from Mary Wigman and the pioneers of modern dance to the collected work of Thomas Hanna and to the post-contemporary dance researchers based on embodiment.
It is highly recommended for
- Researchers in dance, movement, somatics, Asian philosophy and performativity
- Somatic disciplines 's practitioners
- People who feel curious and are looking for a bodily reconnection to their "spirit" in forms of life
- Professionals in the performing arts
